The Huawei Matebook 16s launched in China in May and went global earlier this week. The company was kind enough to send us a sample for review, and it’s finally with us.

This is Huawei’s current flagship laptop, which uses the latest 12th generation Intel processors. There are three options: Core i5-12500H, Core i7-12700H and Core i9-12900H, and our unit uses the middle one.

All Matebook 16s laptops come with Windows 11, 16GB LPDDR5 RAM and 512GB or 1TB PCIe SSD. We have the most spacious storage for testing, but the performance differences should be minimal.

This laptop weighs just under 2kg and is fairly unevenly distributed. The area around the hinge and the top of the keyboard is much heavier, which makes it a little difficult to carry around once opened.

The Matebook 16s has an impressively sized touchpad. That’s not exactly a surprise since we’ve already handled the Matebook 16 which has the same body, but it’s still a pretty big deal.

The “16” in the laptop name indicates the screen size. The 16 “touch screen panel has a resolution of 2,520 x 1,680 px with a 3: 2 aspect ratio. We were rather sad to learn that Huawei has not updated the panel and it remains the one with only 300 nits of brightness – not bad, but anything but impressive.

Another thing Huawei does with all of its laptops is the lack of a designated GPU – we are dealing with an Intel Iris Xe, which offers advantages in terms of battery life and weight, but limits video editing capabilities and game.

The battery capacity is 84 Wh and is recharged by a 90W Huawei SuperCharge USB-C charger provided in the retail box. The higher Core i9 version gets a faster 135W adapter. And since it supports Huawei’s internal standard, it will also provide fast top-ups for P and Mate smartphones and Matepad tablets.

Our review will tell if the updates add enough to make the Matebook 16s a worthy buy at its € 1,699 price point. Stay in the area!
