Xbox boss Phil Spencer says he believes risk-taking story-based games will continue to play an important role in the future, despite the rise in online service titles.

Speaking in an interview with The Guardian, Spencer confirmed that single-player narrative games will still have a place in the gaming industry. According to the executive, these types of experiences can provide value to services like Xbox Game Pass.

“I think we’re probably building more of them than we’ve done in Xbox history,” Spencer said. “Platform owners, regardless of whether that platform is a subscription or a hardware device or a store, are actively investing in new and possibly riskier things, because, if it works, we get value by bringing players into the ecosystem.”

In the same article, Microsoft Studios chief Matt Booty agreed with Spencer, stating that Microsoft “has no direction or mandate that every game must be a continuous and lasting game.”

Microsoft has invested heavily in acquiring new developers in recent years, with many of those studios focusing on single player games focusing on telling an in-depth story. This includes the likes of Obsidian, Double Fine, and most of the developers included under the Bethesda umbrella.
