Steam has spent many years as the favorite showcase for PC gamers to browse, purchase, and download games. And now, Valve CEO Gabe Newell has offered a vague suggestion that this popular service could be coming to consoles.

In this case, the vague suggestion came from Newell’s appearance as a guest speaker at Sancta Maria College, a New Zealand high school, on Tuesday. According to a video of the event since canceled on Reddit, a student in the crowd asked Newell about the possibility of Steam coming to consoles. This is what he had to say: “You’ll have a better idea by the end of this year.”

Given just that vague hint, players can only speculate what form Steam might take on consoles. Some think it might be as simple as Valve to bring their own games (like the hit VR Half-Life: Alyx) to consoles. Others think we could get Steam-style functionality directly from our Xbox and PlayStation consoles.

It is possible that this can end up being very disappointing. In 2011, Valve made noise about using Steam on PS3 for Portal 2. However, when the game came out, it simply required players to log into a Steam account via PS3, without offering any additional Steam features or benefits.
