Great news! WhatsApp finally adds support for HD videos! No need to double-check the date on this article, you haven’t accidentally been transported back to 2005. It’s still 2023 and one of the world’s leading messaging services is just now looking to add a feature like this.

WhatsApp last week added long-overdue support for high-resolution images, and back then it promised it would do the same for videos at a later date.

WhatsApp HD video support is now available

Well that’s today. The rollout has started, but of course it’s gradual, so it may take a while before you see HD video support on your account. Don’t worry, both iOS and Android devices get it.

With this feature you will (optionally) be able to share 720p video, versus 480p which used to be the only choice. To use it, select the video or videos you want to share, tap the new HD button at the top of the screen, then confirm whether you want to share in standard quality or HD quality (aka 480p or 720p) in the dialog that appears. This will also show you the size of the associated files, to help you decide.

As with HD images, all images and videos, HD videos shared on WhatsApp are protected with end-to-end encryption. The recipient of an HD video will see an HD badge on it.
