WhatsApp has added the ability to send image and video files in their original, unaltered state in its latest update for iOS.

WhatsApp for iOS adds the option to send uncompressed images and videos

With this feature, users can now choose to send media files without the additional compression that the app would perform to save the data. This is separate from the HD quality option added earlier this year, which would only slightly compress files to better preserve the original quality.

WhatsApp for iOS adds the option to send uncompressed images and videos

To send images and videos in their original quality, users need to choose the option to send documents on which they will be presented with an additional option to send photos or videos along with the files. The selected image or video files will then be sent as they are in their original quality. WhatsApp has a 2GB limit for sending files in their uncompressed state.

This feature has been in testing for some time now, but this week it was finally made available to all users. It’s also been a long time coming, as competing services like Telegram have had this option for years now. Unfortunately, WhatsApp will only bring this feature to iOS for now and there is no word on availability on Android, although Android users can still receive these files.
