Last week we asked you how much storage space you use on your phone. It turns out that most can hold a total of 256GB. “Total” because we also questioned you about your thoughts on microSD slots on phones.

Here is the breakdown. Just over 40% of people can squeeze 128GB or less. That said, 36% need at least 256GB. This means 128GB models are still good, but you should look at a phone with more space if you want to keep it for a long time.

A newly set up phone is pretty skinny, but the cruft starts to build up pretty fast. Photos you took quickly and didn’t intend to keep, images from instant messaging apps, app caches, and more consume your storage space.

You can handle these things, of course. There are automatic tools to help you, such as the Google Files app and Google Photos automatically suggest which files can be deleted or archived. But even then it’s a hassle and apps grow in size over time, which you can’t do much for other than deleting an app or two.

The importance of microSD slots has vanished. A year ago, more than 50% of people thought a memory card slot was essential. Now that number has dropped to 40%. It seems the slot is moving into “nice to have” territory.

This is arguably for the best as most manufacturers omit a microSD slot on new phones (in fact it has been the norm for high-end offerings for a while). And even when it is available, it is often a hybrid slot, meaning you have to decide whether to expand the storage space or have a second SIM card.

A second SIM slot means you can get cheap data, especially when you’re on the go. And for some, it’s more important than having extra memory on their phone.
