Sony launches high-end Bluetooth headphones and earphones every couple of years, and it’s almost time for the WF-1000XM5 true wireless earphones to replace the WF-1000XM4 by 2021. The new earbuds were recently certified by the FCC and the images then released reveal that they are more compact than their predecessors – news that will no doubt be greeted with sighs of relief left and right, since size was one of the major issues with the M4s.

Inside the case, you can see that Sony has switched to two pins instead of three for charging the buds, while the case material appears to be matte plastic like for the M4’s case. While it’s very difficult to ascertain the dimensions of the case from these context-free images, it appears that it may be smaller than that of the M4.

The case is rated for 5V 230mAh, which is more than the 5V 140mAh rating the M4’s case got, and hopefully this translates into faster charging. The LED has moved from inside the case to the front. Of course, there is wireless charging.

The WF-1000XM5s are made in China, just like Sony’s LinkBuds S. They could become official very soon now that certifications are underway and leaks start popping up.
