Wireless charging speeds aren’t what they used to be. In 2009, Palm Pre gave us our first experience with wireless charging via a proprietary Touch Stone charger and a special back cover. Soon after the emergence of the Qi wireless industry standard, although charging speeds peaked at just 5W and were later expanded to 10W and eventually 15W.

There are faster alternatives like Oppo’s AirVOOC 50W wireless flash charger we have here today for a test. As the name suggests, this wireless charger supports speeds of up to 50W for select Oppo and OnePlus devices. Some time ago we already tested the vivo 50W wireless flash charger which managed to fill the vivo X80 Pro from 0-100% in 58 minutes and now we are testing the Oppo 50W wireless charger together with the Oppo Find X5 Pro, which is one of the few supported devices that can wirelessly charge at speeds of 50W.

Oppo claims that a 0-50% charge will only take 22 minutes, and a full charge should be completed in 47 minutes, 7 more than the 80W SuperVOOC wired charging adapter that came with the phone. Let’s test these claims and these are our findings.

Before charging wirelessly at 50W speeds, you will need a 65W (or higher) PD charger connected to the 50W AirVOOC Wireless Flash Charger to achieve the advertised speeds. Fortunately our Oppo Find X5 Pro comes bundled with an 80W SuperVOOC power supply (20V / 4A) and the required USB-A to USB-C cable. For reference, the Find X5 Pro managed a 0-40% charge in 12 minutes and a full 0-100% charge in exactly 40 minutes with its bundled 80W charger.

The 50W AirVOOC wireless charger can also dynamically adjust the charging output according to the device it is charging so you can also charge an iPhone 13 at 7.5W speeds or any Galaxy S22 series phone at 15 speeds W.

So what comes with the AirVOOC 50W wireless charger? Just a USB-A to USB-C cable. You don’t get the required 65W SuperVOOC power supply, so you’ll need to provide your own brick.

AirVOOC 50W offers a wireless dual coil design that allows for a wider detection range. The base is also equipped with a rotating 3,600 RPM fan to keep temperatures in check and has a duct under the phone holder that blows cool air to keep thermals in check. You can place the phone in portrait position and landscape mode when charging and you can also have a case on the phone as long as the case does not exceed 2mm in thickness.

The charger is also equipped with several safety measures, including overvoltage and overcurrent protection, a temperature monitor, electrostatic charge protection, a low voltage monitor and foreign object detection, which can detect objects such as coins and prevent the recharge.

Oppo has also added a silent charging mode that allows you to mute the fan sound during certain hours of the day or night. Oppo Find X5 Pro has a special subsection in the battery menu settings where you can activate the silent charging mode. The charger comes with a set of rubber feet that raise it 3mm above the surface to allow for better airflow.

AirVOOC 50W weighs 180 grams. Oppo’s 80W SuperVOOC charging brick comes in at 120 grams while the cable is another 30 grams, making the grand total for our 50W AirVOOC charger setup of 330 grams.

And now the results.

In our test with the Oppo Find X5 Pro we measured 53 minutes for a 1-100% charge with the AirVOOC 50W wireless flash charger. This is 6 minutes longer than the 47 minutes required by Oppo, although we should consider the ambient temperature as the main variable. Find X5 Pro reached a 13% charge after just 5 minutes on the charger and was at 50% after 23 minutes, which is only a minute away from what Oppo said.

Oppo’s 80W Wired SuperVOOC Charger has taken 40 minutes for a full 1-100% charge, so 53 minutes from the AirVOOC charger is still impressive considering the extra heat generated by wireless charging. A quick comparison with the vivo X80 Pro and its 50W wireless flash charger shows that the Oppo X5 Pro finished a full charge 5 minutes faster, while still boasting a larger 5,000mAh battery than the X80 Pro’s 4,700mAh cell. .

Surface temperatures on both the charger and our Oppo Find X5 Pro review unit remained low and never exceeded the 33 ° C mark during our tests. As soon as we charged the phone, we immediately tested how hot it was and it was just under 32 ° C.

We also had the chance to test the 80W SuperVOOC car charger which promises the same charging speeds as the 80W SuperVOOC power supply bundled with the Oppo Find X5 Pro. It’s really impressive given the size difference between the two chargers.

The 80W car charger is compatible with USB PD 3.0 and has a traditional design with USB-C and USB-A ports and an LED charge indicator. Oppo again uses a six-layer protection system like on the AirVOOC wireless charger. It is important to note that you will need to use a genuine Oppo USB-A to USB-C cable (the one that comes bundled with Find X5 Pro) to reach the claimed maximum speeds of 80W (11V @ 7.3A).

Charging via the USB-C port will get you speeds up to 30W (11V @ 3A) on any USB PD compatible device. You can also charge two independent devices via both ports at the same time, although the maximum speed will be limited to 33W via the USB-A port and 30W on the USB-C connector. With all this information at hand, let’s see what Oppo’s car charger managed with our Find X5 Pro.

The first 5 minutes on the car charger charged the Find X5 Pro up to 25% and the phone reached a 43% charge after 10 minutes. The battery reached 70% charge after 20 minutes and remained at 92% after 30 minutes. Then it took another 10 minutes to reach 100%.

Full charge of 1-100% took 40 minutes which is exactly the same result we achieved with the bundled SuperVOOC 80W charger on the Find X5 Pro. The car charger has the advantage of being only 40 grams light and this is by far the fastest car charger out there. we have tested to date. We did not notice excessive heat coming from the charger during our test, which is another plus.

For the sake of comparison, we added the three chargers used in this experiment to the table below to summarize our results. We can see that both the 80W SuperVOOC wall charger (red) and the 80W SuperVOOC car charger (yellow) are head to head in terms of speed, although the smaller car charger retains the lead for the most part. of the test. On the other hand, we can see that the 50W (blue) AirVOOC wireless flash charger is a bit slower, although it’s still impressive to see it hanging with the other two wired solutions.

Oppo’s 50W AirVOOC wireless charger and 80W SuperVOOC car charger are two of the fastest chargers in their categories and deliver blazingly fast charging times. AirVOOC 50W manages a charger from 1 to 100% in just 53 minutes while the tiny 80W SuperVOOC car charger handles exactly the same 40 minutes – on par with the larger 80W SuperVOOC charging brick bundled with Find X5 Pro.

At € 78 for the 50W AirVOOC wireless charger and € 40 for the 80W SuperVOOC car charger, Oppo is definitely charging a premium for the added utility of charging at blazingly fast speeds. Most users will likely be better off with a regular Qi wireless charger and basic car charger for everyday needs.
