Last month a rumor about Telegram began to spread on the internet that it wanted to launch a paid tier, and today the founder and CEO of the company, Pavel Durov, confirmed that this is indeed happening.
Telegram Premium, as will be known, will be launched by the end of the month. Before you start worrying, however, keep in mind that all current free features will remain free. Not only that, but there are also new features coming to the free plan in the future.
Telegram Premium will allow “anyone to acquire additional features, speed and resources,” Durov says. It will also “allow users to support Telegram and join the club that receives the new features first.” Even users who do not subscribe to Telegram Premium will be able to indirectly enjoy some of its advantages, such as viewing extra-large documents, multimedia content and stickers sent by Premium users, or by tapping to add the Premium reactions already attached to a message to react the same way.
Durov concludes his announcement, which he conveniently posted on Telegram, of course, revealing that the company’s advertising experiments on public channels have been more successful than they expected, but even then, he thinks the service should be funded primarily by i its users, not advertisers, to ensure that users remain its top priority in the future.
