Tecno has announced a new imaging technology called Universal Tone. Leveraging artificial intelligence, it promises to improve skin tones in photos so that people of all colors are captured correctly.

The essence of Tecno Universal Tone is to recognize multiple faces in a photo, along with their facial complexities, and then apply appropriate filters that encompass a wide range of skin tones to eliminate bias in image processing.

The technology combines three engines, according to the press release. The first is the Multi-Skin Tone Restoration Engine, which works with a database of often overlooked skin colors and, with one methodology, creates an inclusive skin tone scale for precise representation. Then comes the local optimization engine, which considers the environment, lighting conditions, color temperature and even the geomorphological landscape to achieve a harmonious result with the surrounding environment.

The final stage of the process is an “AI-based computational portrait engine” that creates a personalized, localized portrait imaging experience by taking into account some localized aesthetic and cultural preferences. Simply put, the Tecno phone will know how people in its markets prefer to appear in their photos, applying the correct color processing.

Tecno presents Universal Tone: imaging technology that improves skin tones in photos

Tecno’s ultimate goal is for all people in a photo to be accurately identified and “beautifully optimized.” The technology is said to allow users to feel truly represented and is a celebration of individuality and diversity. The company also said that Universal Tone will deliver “realistic portraits,” but we have our doubts about how that would translate to real life with so much AI tinkering in the background.
