Tecno today unveiled the latest product from its R&D labs: the Phantom Ultimate rollable smartphone concept. It expands laterally, increasing the display from 6.55″ to 7.11″ in 1.2-1.3 seconds. This second-generation device from Tecno is very similar to the Vision V only without the folding part.

The Phantom Ultimate features a single-traction motor system that expands the device with the push of a button, located on the top right side of the phone. When the device is unrolled, it’s a basic 6.55-inch smartphone, with the additional screen placed on the back acting as an always-on display.

Specs-wise, the panel is a 7.11-inch on-cell LTPO AMOLED with 2,296 x 1,596 pixel resolution and 388 PPI. It offers 100% DCI-P3 color gamut coverage, although such numbers are difficult to verify on a concept.

The device is 9.93mm thick at the base and Tecno promises you can hold it easily in one hand. The device features protective glass for the sliding area and textured back for better grip.

The really sad news is that at this point the Phantom Ultimate is just a concept and there is no indication that it will hit the market anytime soon. Of course, getting rollable phones requires overcoming some technological limitations, and there’s no telling how long that might take.
