Sony’s original PlayStation VR came out in late 2016 and is pretty old at this point. This January the company finally announced plans to release version 2, revealing the design a month later. Sony has never committed to a particular launch date, however, but the assumption was that it will come out this year.

Could it be wrong, Ross Young (di View supply chain consultants) reports that PlayStation VR2 will be released next year. It is unclear what caused the delay, even if it is a delay: 2023 may have been the original goal. However, the lack of the holiday season could affect sales.

The PSVR2 is designed to work with PlayStation 5, communicating via a single USB-C cable. That cable will carry 4K HDR images at 90Hz or 120Hz. The headset’s hardware has been upgraded with a 110 ° wider field of view (compared to the original’s 100 ° FoV) and a much sharper picture thanks to two OLED displays with a resolution of 2,000 x 2,040 px (versus a single 1,920 x 1,080 px panel). Two IR eye detection cameras offer the option for foveated rendering.

In any case, DSCC expects a huge increase in sales of VR headsets this year, despite the delay of both the PSVR2 and the alleged Apple headset. The goal for the industry is to ship over 15 million panels (it’s hard to tell how many headsets it works – some use one panel, others two).
