The all-new Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 mobile chip is set to power the latest flagship Android smartphones and tablets, but Qualcomm also announced its next-generation high-end chip for Windows on ARM laptops: the Snapdragon X Elite. Qualcomm hopes to capture a larger share of the PC chipset market with its latest SoC and is betting big on performance and efficiency.

The Snapdragon Intel’s 13th generation CPUs compete in multi-threaded performance while consuming 68 percent less power. There’s a comparison to Apple’s ARM-based M2 chip with the Snapdragon X Elite claiming 50% faster peak multi-threaded performance.

Graphics-wise, the X Elite features an integrated 4.6 TFLOP Adreno GPU with DirectX 12 API support. The chip can drive up to 3 external UHD monitors at 60Hz. Video editors can take advantage of the Adreno video processing unit (VPU) that supports 4K60 10-bit encoding and decoding for H.264, HEVC (H.265), and AV1 files.

Qualcomm also added a Hexagon NPU with 45 Tera operations per second (TOP) that excels at generative AI tasks. Snapdragon X Elite can manage over 13 billion parameters running on the device and generate 30 tokens per second.

The chip supports LPDDR5x RAM with up to 136GB/s of memory bandwidth and 42MB total cache along with PCIe Gen4 or UFS 4.0 storage. In terms of connectivity, the Snapdragon X Elite gets a FastConnect 7800 system with support for Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4, as well as a Snapdragon

The X Elite supports lossless audio playback thanks to the Qualcomm Aqstic DAC and also features the Qualcomm Spectra image signal processor (ISP) with support for dual cameras up to 36 MP and 4K HDR video capture.
