Samsung’s new SmartThings Station is a multifunctional hub for your smart home: it’s a hub, doubles as a button, and has a built-in 15W Qi charger. Note that this supports the Matter protocol, which has been widely adopted by the smart home industry: it has unified the ecosystems of Samsung and Google, even Apple has added Matter support to iOS 16.1.

The basic function of the SmartThings station is to connect all your smart home devices, which can use one of several protocols. This lets you control them from your phone even when you’re not at home.

You can also control them from the station itself: a single, double or long press can trigger a scene. For example, this can turn off all the lights and turn off some devices when you leave the house (and then turn them back on when you get home). It can tell your TV to enter Game mode and your phone to Do Not Disturb mode. It can also close the blinds and turn down the temperature as you get ready for bed.

The station also integrates with the SmartThings Find network. Since it’s always at home, it can detect if your registered devices are at home and when they leave/enter. This includes the devices you carry with you – phone, tablet, watch, earphones – but also anything with a connected Galaxy SmartTag or SmartTag+. The SmartThings Find network is growing rapidly, reaching 200 million registered devices last year.

Finally, the station can charge your phone, watch, earphones and any other device that supports Qi (up to 15W). This is a smart addition as you’ll want the station to be in a convenient position to use its button, which also means it’s in a convenient position to leave a device charging. Once the top-up is finished, you will receive a notification so you can collect it.
