A report from The Elect says Samsung may introduce a new type of blue phosphorescent OLED panel in 2025, although industry watchers initially expected a debut in 2024. It appears that development of the new material used for the blue sub-pixels is not progressing well.

Samsung will roll out new phosphorescent blue OLED panels in 2025

Samsung’s current display technology implements phosphorescent green and red sub-pixels, but the blue diodes still use fluorescence. So you can’t call them PHOLED because that’s not technically correct. The new phosphorescent diodes offer an internal luminous efficiency of 100%, compared to blue fluorescent ones which reach 25%.

If Samsung could make proper blue phosphorescent diodes, that would potentially improve power efficiency quite a bit. However, there is one big caveat to consider: the lifetime of blue fluorescent diodes is about 55% of that of blue fluorescent diodes. This is a significant drawback, and it’s why some people familiar with the matter don’t believe Samsung will be able to implement this technology in commercial products by 2025.

In any case, Samsung will continue its research and development efforts as it will be the first manufacturer to mass-produce PHOLED panels, potentially securing a huge market advantage in the coming years.
