Another week, another contradictory rumor regarding the death or resurrection of the fabled Samsung Fan Edition line. This time it’s bad news: apparently the Galaxy S23 FE is not happening after all.

It might be sad and all, but then again, the same source gives us an incredibly intriguing flip side to this rumor. The Korean company is said to be working on a “Tri-Fold” device, and it “may finally ship this year.” This is typical “great if true” news, since we’ve pretty much had single-hinge foldouts in recent years.

Samsung may launch a Tri-Fold device this year, the S23 FE is not happening

This promises to be a double-hinged, three-part foldout similar to a pair of concepts Samsung Display showcased at CES in January. There are no further details on this at this time, but it’s been a while since a whole new form factor made it into the mobile world, so we’re excited. There’s also the fact that this device still features folding, and that’s basically a solved problem at this point.

So while the form factor itself might be new, the fact that it’s an expansion (both literally and figuratively) of an already existing one means there’s potential here to forgo all the usual issues that arise when something new arrives. completely new. the market for the first time – it’s just an extra hinge and a more complex screen to use in this case. New, yes, never done before, yes, too, but not quite out of bounds.
