The fate of the Meta Quest Pro is uncertain: Even if it wasn’t canceled (as some premature reports claimed), the headset can’t compete with the Apple Vision Pro (which is super popular, Apple says). According to the Korean publication, the Facebook owner has now teamed up with LG to build a much improved following Maeil economic newspaper.

Initially, Meta struck a deal with LG Display for OLED microdisplays. However, the deal was expanded to include parts from sister companies: batteries from LG Energy and other components from LG Innotek.

The new headphones will reportedly arrive in 2025 at a price of $2,000. The Quest Pro originally launched at $1,500, but was later marked down to $1,000. Both prices are well below the $3,500 price tag of Apple’s “space computer” (scheduled to launch next year), so they weren’t really direct competitors.

So far it is unknown what improvements will be present on this Meta Quest Pro 2 (or whatever it will be called). OLED microdisplays will increase resolution over the Quest Pro’s 1,800 x 1,920 px per eye (with 106° horizontal FoV), or about 7 million pixels in total. For comparison, Apple headphones have a total of 23 million pixels. Either way, Meta tends to be pretty open with the VR tech it’s developing in its labs, so we should know more about this Pro headset before 2025.

At the lower end of the scale, the Meta Quest 3 will arrive this fall for $500. But the company also has an even cheaper headset in the works: a sub-$200 device for 2024. Keep in mind that this could mean “$199 “, but that’s still less than the current $300 price of the outgoing Quest 2. Also, this is not part of the LG deal.
