Qualcomm released the Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 over the weekend, a chipset, based on 4nm process technology, meant to be a solution for phone makers who want a capable platform that can fit into a much lower budget than the Gen 8 chip.
The 7s’ CPU is less powerful than any other chip in the Snapdragon 7 series, the ISP isn’t as impressive either, indicating a slightly lower overall ranking. Some rumors suggest that the Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 could arrive with the Redmi Note 13 series, which is expected to launch this month.
The name might seem confusing, because there wasn’t a first-generation 7 or a second-generation Snapdragon 7. We also don’t know what “s” means, but it’s clearly an indicator of cut specs. The CPU has four cores at 2.4GHz for performance and the other four at 1.95GHz for efficiency.
The Adreno GPU is not specified, but is listed to support FHD+ resolution at 144 Hz. The FastConnect 6700 connectivity platform is a step down from the 6900 in the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2, and with it the peak DL speed is only 2.9Gbps, while supported Bluetooth is limited to 5.2, which still supports low-power audio.
The Spectra ISP supports a smartphone with a single camera of up to 200 MP and 4K video capture at 30 fps. Memory is LPDRR5 at 3200 MHz, while other features include USB-C 3.1 and Quick Charge 4+.
Qualcomm has not officially released a time frame in which we will see devices with the new chipset.
