Qualcomm today announced the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chipset for extended reality headsets. This would include AR, MR and VR devices. The platform that will be used by Samsung and Google in their future headsets supports 4.3K resolution for each eye with a resolution of up to 90 frames per second.

The XR2+ Gen arrives with a 15% higher GPU and 20% higher maximum CPU frequency than the regular XR2 Gen 2. The updated hardware enables dynamic foveated rendering, spatial distortion, and super gaming resolution even in 4K graphics.

Qualcomm uses artificial intelligence on the device that will support 12 or more simultaneous cameras that should improve spatial interactions, including head, controller, facial expression, depth estimation, and 3D reconstruction.

The platform supports 12ms color see-through video, and devices with XR2+ Gen 2 would work on all wireless protocols, including Wi-Fi 6, 6E, and 7.

With such heavy feature support, we expect the new headsets to compete with the Apple Vision Pro. Qualcomm hasn’t said when we should expect the first devices with the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chip.
