Qi2 (pronounced “chee two”) is the latest wireless charging standard from the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) and was announced in early 2023. We haven’t heard much since then, but the WPC has now issued a press release official confirming that the first batch of Qi2 chargers is now completing certification testing and will arrive to consumers in time for the holiday season.

Qi2 wireless chargers will be confirmed to debut this holiday season

Qi2 is available in two profiles with the Magnetic Power Profile (MPP) based on Apple’s MagSafe technology that Cupertino contributed to the WPC and offers charging speeds of up to 15W and magnetic attachment. The second is an improved version of the Extended Power Profile (EPP) that forgoes the magnetic attachment but still supports Qi2 devices and offers double the charging speed at 30W.

We are excited to see our members quickly embrace Qi v2.0 and build Qi2 device accessory ecosystems. We fully expect Qi v2.0 to quickly become the de facto global standard for wireless charging. – Fady Mishriki, Chairman of the Board of Directors of WPC

The main selling point of Qi2 chargers is their ability to magnetically connect to iOS and Android devices, as well as wireless accessories like earphone cases and smartwatches. The WPC press release confirmed that the iPhone 15 series will be among the first devices to benefit from the new standard with accessory makers such as Belkin, Mophie, Anker and Aircharge already testing their soon-to-launch Qi2 products.
