Introduction and specifications

Just like last year, nubia’s new Red Magic 7 series comes in two versions: standard and Pro. We’ve already looked into the vanilla model, so we know what to expect from the next level. After all, the two phones are quite similar, with only a couple of marginal differences. Or maybe not so marginal?

Perhaps one of the 7 Pro’s most notable advantages over its non-Pro sibling is the battery. The 7 Pro adds 500mAh more than the 4,500mAh, but still uses a 65W PD 3.0 charger. This applies to the global market. The Chinese counterpart gets a faster brick with 135W capacity.

Then we have the UD selfie camera, which has helped improve the screen-to-body ratio, and it’s a novelty that only a few smartphones on the market have. ZTE has a history with this kind of approach, releasing the world’s first commercially available UD camera. However, the screen diagonal remained 6.8 “and the refresh rate dropped from 165Hz to 120Hz. This probably wouldn’t be a problem as there are hardly any games that can take advantage of such a fast refresh rate.

Of course, the chassis is slightly different, but the design language is familiar, as is the rest of the hardware. All the iconic Red Magic features that make the series stand out are here too. This includes the built-in cooling fan, which, while it may seem gimmicky at first, is quite useful for sustained performance. An important aspect of any gaming phone.

If you’re wondering if the vanilla option makes more sense at around € 630 starting price than € 799 Red Magic 7 Pro, read on as we try to answer this question on the following pages. Either way, the Pro option is still pretty competitive for the feature set.

The clear silicone case is also handy, which is nice because it doesn’t completely hide the design.
