Elon Musk, the new Twitter CEO, has revealed his plans to take more steps to make social media less dependent on advertising. Twitter Blue, currently offered at $ 4.99 per month in four countries, will be increased to $ 8 and will now offer a blue check mark next to the paying user’s handle. This is a response to previous claims that the service would cost $ 20.
In a series of tweets, the businessman said that the current system of “gentlemen and peasants” is “bullshit” and will offer the check mark to anyone who shells out the money each month. The subscription will also offer priority in replies and mentions, which is a way to fight spam.
In addition, users will be able to post longer video and audio, as well as receive half of the ads. Publishers who decide to work with Twitter will receive a paywall bypass.
Interestingly, the editing feature currently enabled for Blue users only will be available to everyone, for free, according to Platformer’s Casey Newton.
The Twitter verification check is currently only available to people who may be impersonated, such as celebrities, politicians, and journalists.
When / if the new update arrives, all users will be able to write a secondary tag that is currently reserved only for high profile politicians.
