Introduction and specifications

The Moto G82 is one of Motorola’s mid-range offerings announced in May this year and yes, this review is a long time coming. But the G82 is finally here and now that its price has dropped below €300, it’s also quite an intriguing device. There is also a Chinese variant called Moto G71s and it could be argued that the G82 is a slightly updated version of the Moto G71 5G for the global market.

The G71 5G and the G82 are quite similar, but the latter also offers a better feature set for the price. Plus, the G82 is a new level up in Motorola’s Moto G lineup this year, as there wasn’t a G81 last year.

Now that we’ve established the Moto G82’s place in Motorola’s portfolio, let’s take a closer look at the spec sheet.

The specifications of the Motorola Moto G82 at a glance:

  • Body: 160.9×74.5×8.0mm, 173g; Glass front, plastic frame, plastic back; Water repellent design.
  • Screen: 6.60″ AMOLED, 120Hz, 1080x2400px resolution, 20:9 aspect ratio, 402ppi.
  • chipsets: Qualcomm SM6375 Snapdragon 695 5G (6nm): Octa-core (2×2.2GHz Kryo 660 Gold and 6×1.7GHz Kryo 660 Silver); Adreno 619.

  • Operating system/software: Android 12, planned update to Android 13.
  • Rear camera: Broad (main): 50 MP, f/1.8, 1/2.76″, 0.64µm, PDAF, OIS; Ultra wide angle: 8MP, f/2.2, 118˚, 1/4.0″, 1.12µm; Macros: 2MP, f/2.4.
  • Front camera: 16 MP, f/2.2, (wide), 1.0µm.
  • Video capture: Rear camera: 1080p@30/60fps; Front camera: 1080p@30fps.
  • Battery: 5000mAh; 30W wired.
  • Various: Fingerprint reader (side-mounted); 3.5mm jack; stereo speakers.

At first glance, the Moto G82 has expected hardware for the asking price with a 6.6-inch 120Hz OLED panel, Snapdragon 695 SoC that does the heavy lifting, and 6GB/128GB memory configuration by default. There’s also a microSD card if storage isn’t enough. The battery is also in line with 2022 standards: 5,000mAh supporting 30W fast wired charging.

Interestingly, the 50MP main camera has OIS, which is a rare feature in this class. The company likes to include optical stabilization in its budget phones, which is commendable, but we’re a little concerned about the sensor size: 1/2.76″. It’s a bit smaller than we would have expected. However Specs aren’t everything, especially when it comes to photography. We’ve seen some hidden gems from Motorola in the past, so we might be pleasantly surprised by the G82.
