Gaming Phones: They are like regular phones, but more playful. What does that even mean? What Makes a Gaming Phone a gaming phone? More performance? Better cooling (sometimes with dedicated fans inside or attached outside)? More game-centric features like dedicated buttons? A design that screams “game”? RGB lights? All of the above?
What is a gaming phone? And is the Poco F4 GT a gaming phone? Does this mean that it is only good for professional players or can normal people appreciate one? So many questions, in short. We will go ahead and spoil the last one for you from the very beginning: of course, normal people can buy and enjoy this device; it’s not like there’s such a thing as “too much performance”. On the other hand, going that route requires living with some quirks, which we’ll deal with pretty quickly once we get to the next page.
Poco’s GT line screams “game”, but it does so at a lower volume than other device families – think Red Magics and ROG Phones and the like. These are all gaming phones, but they are different and the Poco F4 GT seems to be on the more tame side of things, especially if you get it in any color other than yellow.
Games aside, this is also a phone launched with the flagship chipset of its time, so it could comfortably fit into the “flagship killer” or “affordable flagship” category. So is he a handyman? Do you excel at any of these, or do you try to be many things to many people without being really good at any?
This is what we set out to discover. We’ll say it right from the start – this isn’t going to be a game-focused review. None of our long-term reviews have ever been and we won’t start now. Most people out there aren’t heavy mobile gamers, but most people probably wouldn’t mind finding out if the Poco F4 GT, with its reasonable price tag, could be their daily driver. And not necessarily thanks to his playing skills, that is. But they can certainly be nice to have.
So let’s buckle up and find out what the Poco F4 GT is about, marking the first time we’ve reviewed a long-term gaming phone, as well as the first time we’ve long-reviewed a device from the Poco GT line-up. A lot of firsts then; let’s go straight to this.
