Apple has released some new numbers on the adoption rate of its mobile operating systems, which reveal an interesting situation where the trajectories of iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 compared to their predecessors are practically opposite.

The adoption of iOS 17 follows the adoption of iOS 16 around the same time last year. The new version is already present on 76% of iPhones introduced in the last four years. This compares to 81% for iOS 16 at a similar time. Sure, the difference isn’t huge but it’s there: Maybe people don’t consider iOS 17 and subsequent timely updates as important as they considered iOS 16 a year ago?

iOS 17 adoption isn't as fast as iOS 16, but iPadOS 17 is ahead of iPadOS 16

In any case, 20% of iPhones introduced in the last four years are still running iOS 16, while 4% have previous versions. If we talk about all iPhones still in use, iOS 17 has a 66% slice of the pie, iOS 16 sits at 23%, and all previous versions have a total of 11%.

When it comes to iPadOS, the situation is reversed: iPadOS 17 is experiencing more popularity than its predecessor a year ago. iPadOS 17 is currently installed on 61% of iPads introduced in the last four years, followed by iPadOS 16 at 29% and previous versions at 10%.

Last year, iPadOS 16 was only present on 53% of devices introduced in the previous four years, so that’s quite a jump. If we take all iPads in use, iOS 17 is present on 53%, followed by iPadOS 16 with 29% and other versions with 18%.

These numbers are obviously better than those of Android (we assume, although Google has stopped publishing them), but it makes sense since Apple is a company that doesn’t handle many devices in general, while the Android ecosystem is much more diversified.
