Earlier this year, IDC reported that PC shipments for the second quarter of 2022 were down 15.3% from last year’s second quarter. Now analysts have released preliminary results for the third quarter, which show that the sector suffered a further 15% decline.

The total number of shipments (direct to consumers plus shipments to distribution channels) rose to 74.3 million, up from 71.3 million shipped in the second quarter, but below the 80.5 million units shipped in first quarter (which represented a 5.1% year-on-year decline from Q1 2021).

Overall, it looks like 2022 will be weaker than last year. That said, shipments are still “well above” pre-pandemic levels when most of the new PCs purchased were intended to replace older Windows 7 computers, as the operating system was nearing its end-of-life phase ( the deadline was January 14, 2020).

What will happen next? Well, IDC also kept an eye on the average selling prices (ASP) of the computers. Components were in short supply and their prices went up (as did logistics costs), so ASPs rose for five consecutive quarters, peaking at $ 910 in the first quarter of this year, the highest level since 2004. However, ASPs declined in the second quarter and again in the third quarter, indicating “a retreating market,” writes Linn Huang, vice president of research, Devices & Displays at IDC.

Looking at individual companies, Apple was up 40.2% over the same period last year, the rest of the top 5 companies were down. This means that Apple nearly matched Dell’s volume this quarter, although the situation looked very different in the third quarter of last year: Dell shipped twice as many computers as Apple at the time.

A quick note of what IDC includes under the “PC” label: that means desktops, laptops, and workstations, but not x86 servers or tablets (2-in-1 convertibles were not included either).
