Yesterday Honor presented its new generation foldable, the Magic V2. It is a horizontal folding and the first of its kind to measure less than 10mm thick when closed. Honor believes this marks a turning point and that bar phones will soon start to wane in popularity in favor of foldables like the V2, at least in the premium segment. However, despite now having three foldables under its belt, Honor still doesn’t have a flip phone.

The company is actively evaluating the form factor, but it doesn’t want to launch an even-ran: it wants a folding flip that stands out in the market, similar to the Magic V2.

That’s all the information we’re getting for now, although we can imagine that the progress made on the V2 hinge design could translate to flip phones as well. Honor engineers created a gearless unibody hinge mechanism with a 3D printed titanium alloy cover, which made the hinge stronger and lighter.

As for the longevity of the hinge, Honor has done its own internal testing, but believes that letting the media and consumers in general experience the durability of the hinge for themselves will be much more effective than running ads.

There’s a related form factor, rollable phones. When we asked about it, Honor made an interesting point: We’ve seen a couple of demo prototypes from manufacturers, but they probably don’t intend to make a device for retail.

The reasoning is that companies keep the products they intend to launch a secret and therefore will be much less eager to show them before they are ready.
