Google’s first foldable smartphone has been around for quite some time now, under more than one name. According to a new leak today, however, it will be called the Pixel Fold.
It’s apparently still in the works, currently one of Google’s “most secret projects ever,” and will presumably launch next May alongside the Pixel Tablet. Let’s assume a presentation at Google’s annual developer conference, I/O, since it always takes place in May. There will be two color versions, which Google calls Chalk (aka white) and Obsidian (aka black).
A myriad of renders of the device have been leaked in both colorways, recreated based on 3D renders, and “other stuff,” but no specs this time around.
However, the anonymous sources that made this report possible say that the Pixel Fold will have the “usual Pixel performance” and the flagship Pixel camera. A source pointed out that the device is very heavy, though he didn’t go on to answer the all-important “compared to what?” request.
The price of the Pixel Fold has also been revealed: $1,799. This is exactly the price at which Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold4 launched in the US in August, and we mention it because it will be the Pixel Fold’s main competitor for the foreseeable future. That said, when Google’s foldable finally hits the streets, the Galaxy Z Fold4 is sure to benefit from loads of discounts, so whether or not the Pixel Fold will have enough points of differentiation to convince people towards itself remains to be seen.
The Pixel Fold’s “camera bar” isn’t as wide as that of the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro, as it doesn’t go all the way to the edges. However, it’s still quite substantial and somehow makes this phone instantly identifiable as a Pixel. There are two 9.5MP selfie cameras, one inside the hole punched in the outer screen, the other on the right side of the inner screen’s oddly large top bezel.
The power button has the fingerprint reader built in, and there are two speakers: one on the top, one on the bottom. That’s all this leak reveals, but we’d naturally expect the Pixel Fold to be powered by a Tensor chipset.
