Yesterday we heard that the upcoming Google Pixel Fold 2 might skip the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro’s Tensor G3 chipset and go straight to the Pixel 9 and 9 Pro’s Tensor G4, which probably also means it will only be introduced alongside those flagship devices October and not May like the original Pixel Fold.
Today an image of what is purported to be a Pixel Fold 2 prototype was leaked from the same source behind yesterday’s report, and you can see it below in all its hidden glory.
It’s easy to immediately notice two things that are very different about this model. First, the camera bump has a new shape, a far cry from the visor-like contraption of the original Pixel Fold. That’s strange since the elongated camera island that spans most, if not all of the back, has become a defining feature of the Pixel line.
Next, the Pixel Fold 2’s cover screen is clearly longer and narrower than that of its predecessor, which has a very large form factor, so much so that, in fact, when opened it registers as landscape mode for apps, which has caused a lot of problems with those who simply refuse to have one. The Pixel Fold 2 looks set to correct this by being at least a little longer than it is wide when opened, so apps will automatically switch to their portrait orientation.
While we can’t see the internal screen, the source of this image says it has a hole-punch cutout for the selfie camera on the top right, unlike the OG Pixel Fold which has it in the frame. The Pixel Fold 2 is supposedly “fairly thin” but still has a very noticeable display crease.
Of course, this is just a leaked image, so the usual warning applies: take it with a grain of salt. If the Pixel Fold 2 only appears on the market in October, we’ll have plenty of time to find out more until then.
