A new report suggests that Google plans to start mass production of parts for its foldable flagship in the third quarter. Samsung Display, specifically, will start producing foldable displays in July or August, according to The Elect. Google’s foldable project has experienced numerous delays over the past couple of years, so these plans aren’t set in stone.

There seems to have been a downgrade of the displays. The Korean publication reports that Samsung Display will make a 7.57-inch foldable panel and a 5.78-inch panel for the cover display. Last month’s renders suggested 7.69″ and 5.79″ diagonals.

More troubling than the size is the information that Google has opted for an older, pre-Galaxy Z Fold3 display technology. The 2021 Z Fold3 skipped a layer of polarizer, which made the display thinner and lighter and (more importantly) easier to fold.

Also, stylus support is “unlikely” so it will remain exclusive to Samsung’s foldable flagship. There have been hints of an advanced under-display camera for the cover display, but that’s probably not happening.

While the Google Pixel Fold may not be as powerful and advanced as initially expected, it could at least be cheaper: A November report said it will cost a whopping $1,800 (compared to $1,400 a year’s reports claimed).

Google I/O will take place in May, but it will be too soon for a full reveal of the foldable Pixel (at least if The Elec the time is correct). That could mean an October launch alongside the Pixel 8 series (the 7 series was unveiled on October 6, 2022).
