Meta has announced a bunch of new features coming to Facebook Messenger, and in case you don’t see the changes yet, it’s probably a gradual rollout, so wait a couple of days. Perhaps the most notable change is the default end-to-end encryption.

From now on, all your private messages will be encrypted and only you and your recipient will be able to read those messages. This is a big step in the right direction, as most competing messaging services, not just privacy-oriented ones, already offer end-to-end encryption.

In addition to encryption, you can now edit messages (a long-overdue feature), send disappearing messages, hide the read receipt so people can’t see when you’ve read their message, and there are some improvements to voice messaging . For example, you can listen at 1.5x or 2x speed and continue listening to messages where you last left off. There’s a problem with editing messages, though: you can only do so with messages within 15 minutes of sending.

Photo and video quality improves, and Meta is now testing photos and HD videos with a small group of users before making changes worldwide.
