Global smartphone sales rates fell 8% in the July-September period compared to the same period last year. The latest report from Counterpoint suggests that slowing consumer demand is the main driver of the sales decline. The market saw a slight growth of 2% in the third quarter compared to the second quarter, likely driven by the launch of the iPhone 15 series last month.
Samsung maintained its position as a global leader in the smartphone industry, accounting for approximately 20% of total sales in the third quarter. Samsung’s Galaxy A series has been the key driver for the South Korean brand. Apple came in second with 16% of the market, while Xiaomi rounded out the top three places with a 12% share. Oppo (10%) and vivo (8%) are the other brands in the top five rankings.
Honor, Huawei and Transsion Group (Tecno, Infinix, Itel) were the only brands that recorded positive year-on-year growth during the third quarter, while all of the top five major brands (excluding Apple) recorded double-digit declines on annual basis. Counterpoint analysts expect the momentum from September to continue into the fourth quarter, with strong demand closing out the year during the holiday season.
