Next week, the Huawei Mate 50 series will introduce several new additions to the family, which is now entering its tenth generation. What does Huawei have in store for us? CEO Richard Yu gave an interview in which he anticipated three main features.

CEO makes fun of Huawei Mate 50 series: exclusive XMAGE system, satellite connectivity

The first is the XMAGE imaging system, which will be exclusive to the Mate 50 series. It is the result of years of experience building some of the best camera phones on the market, even though Huawei no longer has access to the Leica experience. The XMAGE system is said to be based on a custom NPU built by HiSilicon instead of relying on the Snapdragon ISP.

The next step is a technology that will “pierce the sky upward” – speculation is that this will be satellite communication that can be used for emergency text services (something Apple is rumored to include with the next batch of iPhone 14).

Finally, the Huawei Mate 50 series will introduce the new HarmonyOS 3 to the world. One of the most interesting new features is the phone’s ability to maintain limited functionality even when the battery is low: unconfirmed information states that NFC will continue to work (so they will remain active mobile payments, mass transit passes, etc.) and may even be able to make calls, at least for a few hours after the battery has run out (obviously this will require a small power reserve).

Huawei will unveil the new Mate 50 series at the fall product launch conference, which is scheduled for September 6 (Tuesday, which is also the day before the iPhone 14 is revealed).
