Chinese display manufacturer Beijing Oriental Electronics (BOE) has entered into an agreement with Apple to supply OLED panels for the iPhone 14 series. However, South Korean publication The Elet reports that the company has yet to receive approval from Apple for the iPhone 14 displays and may actually lose the order of around 30 million OLED screens for 2022 iPhones.

This is because BOE unilaterally changed the circuit width design of the iPhone 13’s OLED panels earlier this year to increase the rate of return, which led to Apple asking BOE to stop manufacturing the panels.

Production of BOE’s iPhone 13 OLED panels has been discontinued since February and The Elet reports that the display maker has even sent a C-level executive along with some employees to Apple headquarters to explain the reason behind the design changes unilaterally. BOE also asked the Cupertino tech giant to approve the production of OLED panels for the iPhone 14, but “has not received a clear response from Apple”.

Apple reportedly wants to reduce its reliance on Samsung Display and LG Display by diversifying its suppliers and having a bargaining position. But since the company is said to have asked BOE to stop producing OLED screens for the iPhone 13 and has not yet approved the production of OLED panels for the iPhone 14, Samsung Display and LG Display will likely receive orders for those 30 million panels that were expected to be produced by BOE.
