Samsung’s pioneering Galaxy Note series was discontinued in 2020 while the company shifted its focus to the Galaxy Fold in 2019 and the Galaxy Z Flip in 2020. It may have seemed like a risky move at the time, but it paid off: Samsung’s annual sales of foldables in Europe have now surpassed the old Note series.
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 and Galaxy Z Flip5 went on sale in 38 European countries on August 11. The two have since outsold the Galaxy Note series, which also came out in August.
It’s not just an early rush: Samsung cites industry experts who predict Samsung foldables will surpass 10 million sales this year (this includes the Z Fold5 and Z Flip5 but also older models).
“Our latest foldable phones are selling very quickly. In fact, annual sales of our foldable devices have surpassed those of the Note series in Europe,” said Benjamin Braun, Chief Marketing Officer of Samsung Europe at the Samsung press conference held at IFA Berlin 2023.
To be honest, the Note series didn’t fare too well towards the end (despite a good start), but it’s still an impressive achievement for the latest smartphone category.
Looking specifically at the 2023 generation, the Galaxy Z Flip5 is the most popular device among Europeans: it beats the Z Fold5 70:30. In terms of colors, the most popular options for the Flip were Graphite and Mint. One thing locals really love about this phone is the FlexCam, which gives you more flexibility in framing even if you don’t have a tripod.

The colors chosen for the Fold were Phantom Black and Icy Blue. With the new Taskbar and the thinnest S Pen ever, the horizontal foldable has received a warm welcome in the Old Continent. It is seen as a productivity powerhouse, which was the calling card of the Galaxy Note.
