Welcome to our round-up of the top news articles of 2022. After covering the first two quarters of the year, it’s time to revisit the most interesting stories from the third quarter.
In Q3, we received arguably the biggest smartphone announcements of the year, not counting the Galaxy S22 series. The months of July, August and September saw the announcement of the iPhone 14 series, the new Galaxy Z series, the Nothing phone, the Xiaomi 12S series, the Asus Zenfone 9 and ROG Phone 6 and 6 Pro, among others.
Apple’s event was the most awaited. The iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max brought the Dynamic Island replacement to the notch, as well as the first 48MP camera on an iPhone and the A16 Bionic chip. The iPhone 14 and 14 Plus matched the size of the Pros (this is the year Apple made a Plus instead of a mini), had the same autofocus selfie camera, but kept the A15 Bionic chip.
Xiaomi has once again made the world cast envious glances at Chinese customers with the 12S Ultra. The flagship brought a Leica-tuned 1-inch main camera sensor, as well as a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chip.
The Nothing phone (1) became official but there really wasn’t much to discover: the months of heavy teasing had laid everything bare.
In the middle of the third quarter, Samsung announced the Galaxy Z Fold4 and Z Flip4 along with the new Galaxy Watch5 series and Galaxy Buds2 Pro.
The Galaxy Z Fold4 got an upgrade to the main and zoom cameras, IP ratings for water and dust (a first on a foldable), as well as support for a special type of S Pen with a retractable tip. The Galaxy Z Flip4 got a slight battery boost and a much-needed boost in charging speed. It also has a new main camera and an IP rating.
Huawei and Sony have made major announcements: the Mate 50 series and the Xperia 5 IV. Motorola unveiled the Razr 2022, bringing the device back to flagship status with a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1. Moto also announced the Edge 30 Ultra with a 200MP camera and the Edge 30 Fusion with a 50MP camera.
The first rumors about the Galaxy S23 series also started in the third quarter. We learned that the series will consist of the same S23, S23+ and S23 Ultra and will have mostly the same design.
Ok, to Q4!
There’s also a new chipset, unlike the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus.
Along with a 6.73-inch E5 AMOLED display, 4,860mAh battery with 67W charging.
No more teasers, now we have all the details.
The two models improve the camera hardware and software over the 12 and 12 Pro and offer a more efficient chipset.
The chipset is new, but so is the camera setup and battery.
The latest installments of ROG Phone bring new chipsets, 165Hz screens and better cameras.
The phone offers 67W fast charging and a 108MP primary camera.
The phone offers some interesting features like a dedicated GPU chip and LPDDR5x RAM.
Both use the 8+ Gen 1 chip, in fact, plus the custom V1+ chip that helps with image processing from the GPU and camera.
It is joined by the Redmi Buds 3 Lite.
There is no bigger Flip model, at least not this year. But for fans of small phones, this is one of the few Android flagship options.
The phone also features 120W fast charging and a large VC liquid cooling chamber.
However, not everyone will be able to charge at 150W.
Other than the chipset and connectivity, most of the specifications are the same as the Galaxy A23 4G.
Open sales in China begin on August 15th.
The aspect ratio is now more manageable, but the phone itself is less bulky than its predecessor. It is powered by SD 8+ Gen 1 and charges faster.

The Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 offers a big leap in performance, photo and video capture, and connectivity.
It is the lowest member of the new Mate 50 series.
The new watches offer a temperature sensor, shock detection and low power mode.
That’s right, the new 6.7″ non-Pro model is called the “Plus.” Along with the 6.1″ model it uses last year’s A15 chip and has improved cameras on the front and back.
The 200MP sensor that captures titles is optically stabilized and can do 16-in-1 binning.
The Fusion is powered by the Snapdragon 888+, the Neo uses the more modest 695. The Fusion also has a better main camera with a 50MP 1/1.55″ sensor.
The ROG Phone 6D Ultimate comes bundled with an AeroActive mount.
The larger battery capacity combined with the more efficient chip brings tangible improvements in endurance.
It’s a rebranded Poco M4 5G.
The next budget device will not be all that different from the current A16.
