History

Hitting things is fine, but who and why? In the future, chimeras – chaotic demons of the astral plane – invade the world and corrupt it. The player and his brother join the police force as new recruits, but quickly find themselves drawn into Neuron, a secret team under the leadership of their father. Here the player receives his Legion, a converted chimera under his direct control.

While the story takes broad stretches from anime like Neon Genesis Evangelion or Full Metal Alchemist, the world feels distinct. The rather dry police procedure presented by Astral Chain begins to crack, revealing moments of poignant beauty. The simplicity of the story works surprisingly in his favor. For example, a secondary character might ditch his standard tropes to deliver a heartwarming talk about family. Don’t expect anything fancy, but JoJo’s Law and Order can show surprising emotions.

Missions

Story missions generally follow the same investigation and combat structure. Missions begin with the player walking to the beat and talking to civilians. Combing the crowd at a murder scene could reveal the suspect’s description, what weapon he used or where he escaped. After that, you may find a lost child looking for its mother. Along the way, a bag thief could strike and try to escape the law.

As a result of these small tasks, the world feels alive. At the end of an investigation, the player answers questions based on the evidence gathered, using clues to solve the mystery in question. These side missions fulfill the fantasy of being a police officer, an occupation that desperately needs more exploration in the games.
