Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn is a relaunch of the original MMO Final Fantasy XIV. The original was released in 2010 and closed less than two years later due to incredibly negative reviews. In an effort to recover from that failure, A Realm Reborn takes place five years into the future of Final Fantasy XIV.
History
You have entered Eorzera, a region in the fictional world of Hydaelyn. Where in particular you start in that world depends on the race you choose to play with. But regardless, the game starts the same for everyone.
You have a dream where you defeat an all-black masked man using a shimmering sword of light. When you come back to reality, your world is as you remember. Run errands for the local adventure guild. But then a secret society anoints you as the chosen one. You are meant to be a representative of the Mothercrystal.
