Many Nintendo fans were wary of the news that Chris Pratt would be voicing Mario in the next cartoon Super Mario Bros. movie. Now, co-producer Chris Meledandri has hinted that Pratt won’t try an Italian accent for everyone’s favorite brave plumber.
In an interview with TooFab, Meledandri first of all defended Pratt’s casting. According to the co-producer, “All I can tell you is that the voice she’s making for us in Mario is phenomenal. Yes, I can’t wait for people to hear it. “
But Meledandri revealed that Chris Pratt won’t be using a “It’s me, Mario!” accent in the film. “This is not the tenor of the performance for the whole movie,” he said.
However, the film will explain why Mario plays differently from his many video game appearances over the years. “We cover it in the movie,” he promised. “So you will see that we surely nod to this.”
Pratt has been a controversial casting choice for many reasons, but one is that it doesn’t have a true Italian heritage. And this is something that Meledandri faced head-on: “Well, as an Italian American, I understand that too. You know, I understand the comments. Charlie Day, who plays Luigi, actually comes of Italian origins. Yes, so this is our nod.
The film appears to be a star-studded affair. In addition to Pratt as Mario and Day as Luigi, we will have Anya Taylor-Joy as Peach, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong and Sebastian Maniscalco as foreman Spike. The animated film comes from Despicable Me Illumination studio, with contributions from Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto.
In other words, Nintendo has really put together a dream team for this movie. Super Mario Bros. debuts December 21, 2022. But only time will tell if this film will make up for the abomination that was the 1993 Mario live-action film!
