Previously, developer IllFonic revolutionized video game horror with Friday the 13th: The Game and Predator: Hunting Ground. They are now working on Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed, a multiplayer game with a similar vibe to their previous titles.

In Friday the 13th: The Game, the main goal was for players to simply survive the relentless onslaught of Jason Voorhees (or, if you played Jason, hunt down the hapless campers). In Predator: Hunting Ground, human warriors try to complete objectives and possibly even kill the Predator, who is stronger and better armed than anyone else.

It looks like Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed will be a blend of these previous ideas. Four human players face a ghost and the different Ghostbusters take on different roles (for example, some players may be tasked with blowing up the pesky poltergeist with their proton packets while others are tasked with tracking down ghosts via the PKE meter or knocking them out trap and bust the ghost forever).

As for the ghost? Although he has the ability to soften and stun Ghostbusters, the spirit’s primary role is (appropriately enough) to infest areas and cause as much chaos as possible. Ghosts can scare civilians, summon minions, and effectively hide inside various objects on different maps. So, for human players, this game is less about survival (there is no death in these matches) or combat and more about hunting where a ghost might be hiding.

The game takes place after the events of Ghostbusters: Beyondand there will be appearances of veteran Ghostbusters Winston Zeddemore (who gives you missions) and Ray Stantz (who still runs Ray’s Occult Books). As for your true Ghostbusters, these appear to be new characters that you can customize with different uniforms and gear from various Ghostbusters media.

Unlike the developer’s previous horror games, this title will be family-friendly and suitable for all ages. It will also be cross-platform, which should help players find matches quickly. And matches should take 10 minutes or less to complete.

We don’t know the release date yet, but this game will arrive on PC (via the Epic Games store) as well as on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S / X. Do you think defeating these ghosts (or stalking these players) will make you feel good? Let us know in the comments!
