It’s not too expensive, it’s not too big and there are few with better features – but the nubia Z60 Ultra has yet to prove its worth in reviews, judging by last week’s survey.

We’ve identified some concerns in the comments, so let’s clarify them first. The phone has stereo speakers with the earpiece also acting as a second channel. This was confirmed by people who received their phones early (shipments are expected to start on January 15, but some pre-orders went out early).

The engineers managed to integrate it despite the razor-thin bezel on top and the lack of a visible front camera: despite some conflicting information, all Z60 Ultra units will have an under-display camera. This turned out to be perhaps the biggest design win for the nubia, the rectangular screen with no cutouts or holes presents content as expected.

Another concern people had was the lack of bands for the US market. The phone supports most of the relevant bands, but not all. For example, T-Mobile’s 600 MHz band (n71) is missing. However, Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint are covered. However, you may want to double check the manufacturer’s page and that of your carrier to ensure compatibility.

Others were concerned about software overload, but reports from people who received their units early indicate that preloaded apps are kept to a minimum. A bigger concern was future software updates.

nubia doesn’t make a long-term commitment to releasing Android updates and isn’t quick with updates when it does. The 2022 nubia Z40 series is expected to receive Android 14 later this year. The Z40 Pro got Android 13 (MyOS 13) in March last year, so Nubia’s updates come rather late.

There were also other criticisms of the phone, such as the display resolution being barely above FHD+, no eSIM, no wireless charging, along with the usual lack of a 3.5mm jack and a microSD slot.

Despite all this, the nubia Z60 Ultra is a very powerful phone at an aggressive price, so it just needs to get a thumbs up from the reviews and it will find an audience.
