Netflix has been losing customers lately, and one of the measures to counter the trend is to offer them to come back on an even cheaper, ad-supported level. We now know this is happening, as the streaming platform has revealed that Microsoft will be its “global advertising technology and sales partner.”
In a press release, Greg Peters, Netflix’s COO and CPO, revealed that “Microsoft has the proven ability to support all advertising needs” while working on an ad-supported offering. Microsoft also offered “the flexibility to innovate over time from both a technological and a sales point of view.”
Mikhail Parakhin, President of Microsoft’s Web Experiences, added that all advertisements on Netflix will be available exclusively through the company’s platform. “Marketers who turn to Microsoft for their advertising needs will have access to Netflix audiences and premium connected TV inventory,” the statement also reads.
The companies revealed that the partnership is still in its infancy and that there is a lot of work to be done. Both Netflix and Microsoft have assured they are “thrilled to work together” as they bring the new service to life, but have not disclosed any particular timelines.
