The nubia brand has just announced its Red Magic 8 Pro gaming smartphone. These are actually two different phones: the Red Magic 8 Pro with a 6,000mAh battery and 80W fast charging, and the Red Magic 8 Pro+ with a larger battery. small at 5,000mAh but faster charging at 165W.
The Plus version also comes with more RAM and storage options, but nubia has kept the same overall feature set and design: both the Pro and Pro+ share the same chipset, cameras, footprint, and software.
The two nubia Red Magic 8 Pro devices are equipped with Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset. It is coupled by a Red Magic R2 chip for better gaming effects, such as enhanced sound details, colors, touch sensitivity and haptic vibration feedback.
The screen is a 6.8-inch AMOLED with Full HD+ resolution, 120Hz refresh rate and up to 960Hz touch sampling rate. Just like its predecessor Red Magic 7 Pro, the 16MP selfie camera is located below the display, so there isn’t any kind of punch-hole design.
Speaking of cameras, there are three on the back. The main shooter has a 50MP Samsung ISOCELL GN5 sensor which is 1/1.57″ in size and has 1.0μm pixels. There are also an 8MP ultra wide angle camera and a 2MP macro sensor, but the shooting experience isn’t that important for a gaming phone.
What is more crucial is gaming performance and we cannot have a powerful phone without proper cooling. The nubia Red Magic 8 Pro versions have a set of ICE 11.0 cooling features, including multiple layers of graphite sheets and a 3D vapor chamber with 2,068 mm3. volume.
The side fan now spins at 20,000rpm, and a graphite sheet now protects the entire screen – a big improvement in the world of gaming smartphones.
Nubia has also improved the design of the phone for better connectivity with nine separate antennas around the body. There’s a 3.5mm audio jack on the top and a USB-C port for charging on the bottom.
Two shoulder keys at the top (actually on the right side) bring support for 520Hz tap sampling, and there’s once again a hard trigger for Game Mode.
The nubia Red Magic 8 Pro and its 6,000 mAh battery have an 8C design (eight different cells for heat management). It comes with an 80W charger in the retail box which should deliver 0 to 100% in 35 minutes. It is also the largest battery ever fitted to a Red Magic smartphone.
Then we have the Red Magic 8 Pro+. To provide 165W fast charging, the fastest in a Red Magic smartphone, nubia has reduced the battery to 5,000mAh to make room for the appropriate hardware that takes care of power distribution, security management and general protection .
The 165W charger is a GaN adapter with USB-C, and we highly doubt this variant will escape China as it has to pass rigorous safety checks to be certified worldwide.
ZTE nubia Red Magic 8 Pro and Pro+ with Black and Transparent panels
The nubia Red Magic 8 Pro is available for pre-order/reservation, starting at CNY 3,999. It comes in black color with three memory combinations: 8/128GB, 8/256GB and 12/256GB. The latter is also rumored to come with a transparent back, but that’s not currently available for purchase.
The nubia Red Magic 8 Pro+ also has three memory variants: 12/256GB, 16/512GB and 16/1TB. Prices start at CNY 5,199 for the black version, though eventually each of them will be available with a transparent back for CNY 200 more.
The first sale is scheduled for December 28 at 10am local time. The phone is available on nubia’s online store and JD.com.
