Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi today officially launched 5G commercial services in India at the inauguration of the 6th India Mobile Congress (IMC) held in New Delhi, which ends on October 4th.

The 5G network will be active in 22 cities as part of the first phase of rollout, including Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chandigarh, Chennai, Delhi, Gandhinagar, Gurugram, Hyderabad, Jamnagar, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Pune and Varanasi.
5G services will initially be offered by telecom operators Reliance Jio, Airtel and Vi (Vodafone-Idea) in India. Airtel customers can already experience the 5G network in some cities starting today if they have a compatible 5G smartphone.

Airtel’s 5G service is available in Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Gurugram, Hyderabad, Calcutta, Mumbai, Siliguri and Varanasi, with a nationwide launch expected by March 2024.
Reliance Jio, on the other hand, will provide 5G access to its customers in Chennai, Delhi, Calcutta and Mumbai from Diwali this year (Oct 24) and has committed to complete 5G rollout across India by December. 2023.
He told you that his 5G rollout will begin soon, but he did not disclose when exactly his 5G services will be active in the country, while the state is BSNL will provide 5G services next year starting August 15th.

As for pricing, Airtel said its 5G services will be available at existing 4G rates and the new 5G rates will be announced after some time. However, it will be interesting to see Jio’s pricing for 5G services since the company stormed the Indian telecom sector in 2016 by offering free voice and SMS calls with data at affordable rates, which has been called “predatory pricing” by the competition but helped Jio dominate the market and make mobile data more convenient.
