On Tuesday, the Apple CEO joined President Biden and Arizona officials in a televised event on the site where TSMC is building a semiconductor manufacturing plant set to open in 2024. As Apple expands its relationship with TSMC, the new factory will begin producing Apple silicon in the United States.
In 2021, TSMC originally announced it would invest $12 billion in a manufacturing plant. During Tuesday’s event, TSMC announced it would increase its investment to $40 billion, which represents a second fabrication facility that will enter production of 3nm chips when it opens in 2026. Tim Cook says chips for many Apple products will be manufactured in the Phoenix plant and that “Thanks to the hard work of so many people […] these chips can be proudly stamped: “Made in America”.
