The Chinese smartphone market did slightly better in the third quarter than the second, with a total of 70 million phones shipped. But it still recorded an 11% annual decline.
Mainland China’s market is nowhere near the 2021 level let alone the pre-pandemic.
vivo maintained the top spot with 14.1 million units shipped, but is still over 4 million fewer than in the third quarter of 2021. Oppo (including OnePlus) was in second place with 12.1 million units, down by 27% on an annual basis. Honor handled 12 million shipments for third place, while Apple climbed to fourth with 11.3 million sales.
Apple is the only vendor to experience growth over last year, thanks to strong demand for iPhone 14 Pro phones. On the other hand, Chinese customers did not have a strong interest in vanilla 14 phones.
Once the undisputed leader, Huawei is now out of the top five, but is gaining ground with its 4G-only Mate series.
Canalys does not expect the market to return to higher demand before the end of 2023.
