Need for Speed Payback Review | Gammick

Side bets

A new mechanic that Payback brings is something called Sidebets. These allow you to bet in-game currency on races. They don’t even just win a race. Other parameters you can bet on include running a race for a set amount of time or finishing from last to first. These add a new dimension to events, challenging you to step out of your comfort zone and really push yourself to the limit.

Final verdict

This is not enough to redeem what is, after all, an insignificant game. While running isn’t bad, everything else fails to stick to your mind or leave a lasting impression.

Anyone who wants to drive all the cars available will have to face a grueling effort replaying each event to accumulate the small fortune necessary to make them viable for competitive use.

Payback simply doesn’t have that essence that made the Need for Speed franchise so popular more than a decade ago. It might be better for EA to stop trying to find it for now.
