missions

The missions are equally disappointing. It all revolves around reaching a specific area and then simply holding it for a short period of time or interacting with an object by pressing a button. Even the biggest public events don’t offer much more than killing a lot of mobs before fighting a bigger, stronger boss. In an age where many MMOs include complex and wide-ranging mission structures, Defiance feels very much like a relic from the past.

History

Defiance begins with a promising introduction that suggests there will be a lot of history to contend with. A deleted scene explains who you are and what is happening, introducing you to this post-apocalyptic world. The Earth has suffered from some unknown catastrophic event and the surface is nearly destroyed. Bowhunters, like you, now spend most of their time trying to find whatever advanced technology they can from the wastelands.

Unfortunately, the elements of the story simply seem to fade after this initial promise. Despite all the potential for great narrative and background story, Defiance fails to use any of it. Alien races, doomsday scenarios, and characters have little or no backstory and do not develop as the plot progresses.

What the setting provides is a great excuse to take a different approach to mounts than other MMOs. In keeping with the sci-fi story and post-apocalyptic wasteland, players move around on ATVs. These vehicles are not only enjoyable to drive, but they also offer some interesting play opportunities when it comes to battling large crowds. The “Mad Max” style vehicles definitely feel world-appropriate and perform well.
