Stranger things fans can’t wait to see season 4 of their favorite show when it returns to Netflix on May 27th. But this large season will come in two parts, with the second half of the season due out on July 1st.

This information comes directly from showrunners Duffer Brothers, who revealed it via the official Netflix website. They explained that splitting the season into two parts is because of its ambitious size. “With nine screenplays, over eight hundred pages, nearly two years of shooting, thousands of visual effects shots, and almost twice the length of any previous season, Stranger things Season 4 was the most demanding season, but also the most rewarding one “.

With the news that season 4 will only have nine episodes and yet will be nearly double the length of previous seasons, each episode may be closer to the length of a feature film. This makes the show a little harder to binge on and helps explain the decision to split the season into two parts.

The news about the long-running season 4 is good. But the Duffers also released some bittersweet news: “It’s also the beginning of the end.” They announced that the series will end with the fifth season.

“Seven years ago, we planned the entire story arc for Stranger things. At the time, we predicted that the story would last four to five seasons. It turned out to be too big for four to say, but – as you will soon see for yourself – we are now plunging into our finale. Season 4 will be the penultimate season; the fifth season will be the last “.

Netflix’s official synopsis for Stranger things Season 4 follows:

“It’s been six months since the Battle of Starcourt, which brought terror and destruction to Hawkins. Struggling with the aftermath, our group of friends are separated for the first time, and navigating the intricacies of high school hasn’t made things any easier. In this extremely vulnerable time, a terrifying new supernatural threat emerges, presenting a grisly mystery that, if solved, could finally put an end to the horrors of the Upside Down.
