Sony has been making some incredibly intriguing smartphones lately, but that hasn’t been the case sale very many of them. Of course, this might make you wonder if the Japanese electronics giant, at some point, decides to cut losses and exit the smartphone business altogether, following in the footsteps of the likes of LG and HTC.

The answer is no. Sony will continue to produce Android smartphones for several years to come. The revelation comes from a rather unlikely source: Qualcomm.

The chipmaker announced today in a new press release that it has extended its partnership with Sony for the Snapdragon platforms that power the Japanese firm’s future smartphones. This is a “multi-year” deal and covers premium, high-end, and mid-range devices.

So it seems very likely that Sony will continue its existing ranges as-is, since there’s no mention of ‘low-end’ we assume it won’t expand into that highly competitive market.

The “joint efforts of Sony and Qualcomm will focus on integrating Qualcomm Technologies’ advanced Snapdragon mobile platforms into Sony’s future smartphone lines, providing users with advanced features, higher performance and more immersive user experiences,” the press release said.

Tsutomu Hamaguchi, head of Sony’s mobile communications business unit, said:

Xperia 1 V, Sony’s latest flagship smartphone powered by Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 mobile platform, has been very well received by customers. We look forward to continuing our work with Qualcomm Technologies to deliver premium and compelling experiences on future smartphones powered by Snapdragon processors. We are always listening to our customers to develop cutting-edge technology that meets and exceeds their expectations, and we trust Qualcomm Technologies to help us continue to move the industry forward.
